Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan

Footloose on stage

Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan’s performance of the musical ‘Footloose’ took place at The Rhyl Pavilion on Thursday and Friday of last week.

The learners had spent months in rehearsals giving up their lunch times and free time after school once the annual production was revealed last November.

Before the show Laura Kestell, Musical Director of the production, said  “It’s been a fantastic opportunity to work with our cast members this year. They have all worked so hard to put this classic show together and it’s been lovely to watch them all grow and develop. Many of our cast members this year are new to the productions at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan including our two lead characters, Ren, played by Year 13 learner James Lawson and Ariel, played by Year 10 learner Amelia Gray. Being able to perform at the Pavilion theatre in Rhyl gives our learners experience of working in a professional theatre environment where they get the full experience of lighting, sound, set changes and a live band. The show has been in rehearsals since January and we cannot actually believe show time is upon us.”

Learners from all year groups were involved in the staging of the show.

Amelia Gray Y10- Ariel “ I love this production because the cast is great and the amount of energy on stage and in rehearsals is amazing. I’ve never done a school production before but I’m so glad I got involved.  I particularly enjoyed singing my solo ‘Holding out for a Hero’ and the audience were really encouraging.”

James Lawson Year 13– Ren “This whole Production and experience with the cast has been incredible. I can’t believe that I’ve never taken part in past productions and I’m so jealous of the younger cast who will be involved in future productions with Emrys ap Iwan”

Iwan Year 7 Butters: Bickle – “I’ve had an amazing experience in the Emrys ap Iwan production. Everyone has worked hard and we have all had fun.”

Bethany Downes Year 10: Rusty –“My favourite moment was performing the song ‘Somebody’s Eyes’ because I like the acting that goes in to this song – we needed to bring out our sassy sides!”

Dillon Naismith: Willard Year 10– “I have really enjoyed this experience as it came with a sense of community and it also gave me the chance to make new friends.”

Mr Cummins, the Headteacher at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan commended the learners for their hard work  he said, ‘This year’s performance was outstanding.  The learners have worked so hard and were so committed to the performance.  It was amazing!’
